Finasteride 1mg (Propecia®) is a prescription only medication that is taken orally to treat male pattern baldness. The medication has been shown to help prevent further hair loss in men with mild to moderate hair loss.
Finasteride is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor. Finasteride works by blocking the body's production of a male hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is a byproduct of testosterone.
When taken orally, Finasteride prevents hair loss by stopping the body's hair follicles from producing new hair. It does this by preventing the body from converting testosterone into DHT. This increased conversion of testosterone into DHT slows down the hair growth cycle, and allows new hair to grow.
The oral route of administration is less commonly used due to potential side effects. Finasteride is typically taken once a day, with or without food, at a dose of 1mg daily.
Finasteride may also be prescribed to men with prostate gland enlargement (benign prostatic hyperplasia), a condition in which the prostate gland does not grow properly or with symptoms such as difficulty urinating, frequent urination, or a need to urinate frequently.
